The group was brutally repressed by President Gamal Abdel Nasser in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then, it has at times been propped up as a foil – especially for Western audiences – with periodic crackdowns that have sent many of its members to prison.”

A Saudi newspaper has reported on comments by the leader of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in which he threatens civil disobdience if the Syrian regime continues its policies. According to a report in Asharq Al Alaswat:
On the same day that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s interview was published in the Wall Street Journal, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood issued a public statement addressed to the people of Syria.
