"Democracy must not begin and end with the elections alone. True democracy actually begins on the day following elections, with the granting of human rights and a concern for citizens' welfare," said Israeli President Shimon Peres, commenting on the current situation in Egypt.
Recalling how a "democratic election" allowed Muslim Brotherhood Palestinian offshoot Hamas to take over Gaza, turning it into a huge terrorist camp subject to Shari'a, Peres added: "If an extremist and dangerous religious dictatorial regime comes to power on the day after elections are held, what good are the democratic elections?"
After the major Hamas victory in the Palestinian Authority's first democratic election in January 2006, a leader of the triumphant terrorist group, Mahmoud Zahar announced: "It will not be just our government...We will work with Fatah and independents and other factions to make it a national government." It didn't take long for Hamas to turn Gaza into Hamastan.
When CNN "experts" opine that the "Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood" is non-violent, and the White House declares it "supports" a role for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt's new government, they clearly ignore statements to the contrary by the group's leaders.
In an interview with Iranian newspaper Al-Alam, on January 31, 2011, leading Muslim Brotherhood member Muhammad Ghannem promised that once the group gets rid of the Mubarak regime, it will close the Suez Canal, a move which will create serious problems for Europe's already teetering economy. Ghannem also said that once in power, the Muslim Brotherhood would stop the gas flow from Egypt to Israel.
Peres is right when he says that the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran, "and international terror is not an Israeli 'monopoly' but a global problem. Only recently, we were witness to a terror attack in the heart of Moscow, and today, no world capital is immune from a terror attack."
