HARPER GOVERNMENT CONDMNED FOR NOT SAYING "NO" TO ISLAMOPHOBIA

- CONSERVATIVES VOTE AGAINST UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL RESOLUTION ON PUBLIC
DEFAMATION OF RELIGION

A UN Human Rights Council resolution urging a global prohibition on the
public defamation of religion was given majority approval on Friday (March
30), but Canada was among the countries that voted against it.

"It is shameful, regressive and outrageous that Canada’s representation at
the UN refused to support this resolution," the Canadian Islamic Congress
said in a statement released today. "This is tantamount to the Stephen
Harper government saying it condones Islamophobia and all the negative
effects that come with it."

The UN resolution was proposed by the Organization of Islamic Conference to
address and deter an international "campaign" that has been waged against
Muslim minorities and the religion of Islam since September 11, 2001. It
"expresses deep concern at attempts to identify Islam with terrorism,
violence and human rights violations" and recommends that all countries
"take resolute action to prohibit the dissemination of racist and
xenophobic ideas and material aimed at any religion or its followers that
constitute incitement and religious hatred, hostility, or violence."

The resolution was adopted by a 24-14 vote with nine abstentions. Canada,
Japan and South Korea joined European countries in opposition.

The 47-nation human rights council has no power beyond drawing
international attention to rights issues and scrutinizing abuses in certain
countries.

"We are seeing more and more examples of how the Conservative government is
working against our traditional Canadian values of respecting other
religions," CIC’s statement concluded.

Today’s statement was also endorsed by Quebec based Canadian Muslim Forum.
