Evacuees from the 13-mile-radius danger zone surrounding Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant are being screened for radiation. Japanese health authorities confirmed that at least 22 people have been exposed to radiation following the hydrogen explosion at the plant's No. 1 reactor building early Saturday morning.

Facing an unprecedented nuclear crisis, Japan struggled hard to avert multiple meltdowns at two of its reactors damaged by the devastating earthquake and tsunami as it braced for a fresh explosion at Fukushima plant amid fears that the toll may exceed 10,000 in the ravaged northeastern coast.

JAPAN’S METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY has said that any radioactive material being emitted from the Fukushima I nuclear plant, where the outer containment building around one plant exploded yesterday, will be carried out to the Pacific Ocean by the overnight wind.

(Reuters) - Frantic efforts in Japan to cool three nuclear reactors may avert a collapse of the radioactive cores and a more costly clean-up, but there is no risk of an extensive radiation leak, a top UK academic said.

MANILA, Philippines - Officials assured the public yesterday that a meltdown in Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan would not affect the Philippines.
In separate interviews, Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute director Alumanda de la Rosa said Japan has facilities to stop the spread of radioactive waste.

TOKYO (Reuters) - More than 2,500 people living near a volcano that has been spewing ash in southern Japan were advised to evacuate their homes Thursday after heavy rain threatened mudslides of accumulated ash, a local official said.

TOKYO -- The weather agency says a volcano in southern Japan is spewing ash and rock again as the country struggles with the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in the north.
The Meteorological Agency issued a warning Sunday saying that Shinmoedake volcano resumed activity after a couple of quiet weeks.
