I find it hard to believe that someone can be so fanatically anti-American that he prefers to support an imported fundamentalist terrorist organization that follows the fanaticism of Ayatollah Khomeini and that is obviously hurting all decent citizens of Lebanon (the local newspapers in Lebanon agree with me). An organization that supports the control of Syria over the territory of Lebanon - the power of the same Syrian regime that was probably behind the assasination of Rafik Hariri.
It would be fine if one old guy had these unusual opinions. But when you realize that 90% of this city (and its universities) considers this person - despite, and in fact because of his extreme political opinions - to be an authority, it becomes hard to decouple yourself efficiently enough so that you avoid panic.
The situation is not yet critical but it is not too funny either. Uranium enriched more than needed for power plants has been found in Iran. Years ago, Iran offered 4 billion dollars to Benazir Bhutto for the nuclear technology. The leaders of Iran have clarified that Israel would be destroyed "by a single storm". In his letter to George Bush, Ahmadinejad has also explained his plans for the future of liberalism and democracy:

The following, last paragraph of the letter argues that the whole world is unifying around the Almighty. Won't you join, George? Given the fact that many other Muslim leaders support this lunatic, there's not too much room for jokes here. It seems that Chomsky has already been fighting the next war for several years: he is fighting on Ahmadinejad's side. I believe that it is usually called "treason" but as you can imagine, things may be very relative in the People's Republic of Cambridge.
